Woman Attains Dreams In Spite Of Obstacles

By Hannah Ford

A lady doctor recalls that she took some time out for the odd party even when she attained her ambition through a roundabout route and as a tribute to an unswerving purpose in life. But as a high school student, she was never single minded. As a local high school girl, she was divided between taking up medicine or linguistics. Therefore, she decided to hedge her bets, taking French and Spanish, English and of course, all the science courses too. Though she was excellent in languages, she still looked on to the wisdom of her Spanish teacher in deciding. She was told that while she can do languages on the side, the medical world will insist that she never puts being a doctor on the second ground.

Enrolling in the local college as she made her choice meant that all the A-level subjects she took were strictly science studies. She kept her ground even when the results after two years were not that encouraging. She passed only chemistry, which was her favorite subject.

She was able to breeze into the university by taking up a Natural Sciences course but she really meant to take medicine and will do so after finishing her first year. She was unable to do well enough thus she was unable to transfer but then she did enjoy this time very much. She got more B’s than A’s. It is for this reason, as well as her love for chemistry that grows by the day, that she decided to complete the degree.

Her immense love for chemistry paved the way for her to major in this as well as food technology. The field allowed her to bag an honors degree. Looking for work after graduation took the toll on her. After leaving the university, she found herself unemployed. There was just no job out there. She looked at the food industry for a job. With discouragement, she asks why she ever got herself into this.

There was only one person, a drug dealer, who was able to offer her a job and he offered her something tempting as he saw her capability in using industrial kettles. According to her, she did get offered a lot of money but then she was not tempted at all and she told him point blank that she was brought up knowing that money is not everything. She firmly held on to her dreams of becoming a doctor as she continued to apply to medical school. She agreed to a teaching job with a heavy heart that still hopes to hear from medical school soon.

She soon decided to join a commercial bank as a trainee manager as soon as she realized that her teaching job won’t be enough to pay for medical school if she will finally get accepted. In the course of her weighing out the pros and cons as well as speaking to different people that she knew, one thing stood out she would simply become a mere employee if she decides to stay on with the commercial bank. Doing her passion while having a business was something medicine offered.

Two years later, she finally joined medical school. Year one traditionally is a mix of fun and learning. She slathered it on herself. She juggled studies with parties and was never a bookworm. Only in her first year, she already bagged awards in community health as well as distinction in being among the top 10 in Physiology. What fascinated her about community medicine the most was its ability to make her connect to other people. Your patients’ lives are revealed as you enter the homes. She called the program truly exceptional.

She avers that while cutting up cadavers can be revolting for her, it wouldn’t trigger any emotional losses inside her. However, pathology was a different story. She saw herself crying for 10 weeks after they had to autopsy the newly dead. The deaths led to her feeling some emotional loss. Pharmacology she loved, perhaps because of her background in chemistry. Chemicals working in the body especially to rid it of disease was something she found so mesmerizing. She would go to the library and read journals, an activity quite unusual for her. Everybody simply got surprised when she bagged a Pharmacology award.

She was quite unable to become a bookworm and, along with five other study partners developed a reputation for organising parties. Every single one of them did well in the finals with three taking home honors. A medal in gynecology was taken home by one of her group members among other awards. We weren’t total time wasters after all.
