Hair Restoration Techiques For Women

By Angelina Brown

Medical science has had several breakthroughs that have changed the lives of so many people but there is one area that is often overlooked. Although 60% of cases of hair loss that are brought to doctors are from female patients, there is less attention given to developing hair restoration for women than for men. Most of the time, the best solution that can be given to them is to buy their own wig.

If you are looking for a female hair restoration solution then there is finally some hope. Although certain male drugs such as Finasteride are not recommended for use by women there are others that are. Finasteride has the nasty side effect of birth defects in male fetuses, thus anyone who has the potential of getting pregnant is not allowed to even touch the tablets as the medication could be absorbed through the skin.

Amazingly, there has been a great development for women’s hair restoration recently. Another medication that was originally used by men only has been approved by the US FDA to be effective for treating women’s hair loss. This drug is named Minoxidil. It was supposed to treat high blood pressure but, during its clinical trials, one observation stood out and that was the improvement of the hair growth of men with male pattern baldness. As known by almost everyone, the cause of hair loss to most men and women is the same and it was decided to have clinical trials to see if it would help women.

Minoxidil showed great results. This should not have been a surprise though as women have been sneaking their husband’s minoxidil for years. With no female hair restoration products available this was there only option. Now that the US FDA has approved the use of Minoxidil they now have their own product formulated for their needs.

This product does not stop hair loss in women completely but it can slow it down dramatically and also it will help some hairs to rejuvenate themselves. When a man or woman is affected by pattern baldness, also known as Androgenic Alopecia, their hair follicles (roots) are attacked by a hormone called DHT.

This hormone causes men’s and women’s hair loss by attacking the follicles and not allowing them to receive the needed blood supply to grow keratin. Keratin is the actual material that hair shafts are constructed of. The DHT bonds to receptors on the hair follicles and inhibits the transfer of the needed nutrients from the person’s blood. This slowly causes the hair growth to slow down and eventually stop.

The reason this female hair loss product can help some hair follicles to be rejuvenated is because they have not been completely shut down yet. The hormone takes a few months to cause the roots to be rendered completely ineffective. If you can begin treatment early enough you can actually counteract the attack and allow the follicle to continue to receive nutrients.

If it has been a while that you have been having hair loss problems, your hair follicles might be already covered by a fibrotic material and, if this is the case, the only remaining option is to have hair transplants for women. Hair transplanting is another kind of hair loss solution that has been viable for men only for several decades. Because of advances in the process, women can also have this treatment nowadays. Women with pattern baldness lose hair over the entire area of their scalps unlike men who have patches or spots of baldness. In effect, there is no healthy donor area where follicles can be harvested to be used as grafts. That’s why it is great news that directs hair implants, where body hairs can be transplanted to the scalp, has been developed and solves perfectly the woman’s hair loss dilemma.

This latest hair loss treatment for women is quite expensive relative to other treatments and it can’t produce great results to cover a receding hair line. The body hairs can work great as fillers though. Because of this, it would be better for you to save what hair you still have instead of planning on replacing it. It is true that prevention is always better than a cure.
