An Attempt to Analyse Fantasy:

By Russell Quirk

Fantasy fiction is an interesting genre to comprehend. I would personally say that it is really ‘pure-escapist literature’; something that ultimately helps us to rediscover the world with open eyes, open arms, and of course an open mind.

In an age where technology and unlimited knowledge is at our fingertips, we often lack a sense of imagination, discovery and wonder. However, with fantasy, we try to reaffirm these attributes as we work to believe in magic once more.

As an obvious keen enthusiast of fantasy fiction, I would have to say that my favourite novels of all time are The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks, Lord of The Rings by J.R.R Tolkein (of course) and, most recently, A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. A Game of Thrones is nothing short of pure genius if you ask me. Each of Martin’s large cast of characters is so rich and believable that you simply cannot help but be hooked from the very first page!

Moving on from TV, there has also been a sudden surge of fantasy films over the last ten years. Without question, my favourites have to be Lord of The Rings (again), Harry Potter (of course) and, most recently, The Hunger Games (pure brilliance). I must also mention the recent revival of the fairy-tale stories, with films such as Snow White and The Huntsman and Red Riding Hood. These remakes are much darker than the Disney versions I grew up with that’s for sure!

On a final note, I guess fantasy and the supernatural teaches us to believe in ourselves and encourage us to exercise that saying, ‘if you try hard, you will succeed against all odds’.

Private Member’s Club, Home House of Portman Square, are also keen enthusiasts of this type of literature and are soon to put on an event called ‘Once Upon a Time’. From Beatrix Potter to Roald Dahl, Hans Christian Anderson to CS Lewis and JK Rowling… enter the magical pages of every story, fable, old wives’ tale and fictional tale you have ever read… Dress to impress and choose your favourite character from any story ever written… Its set to be a truly fantastical party!

Home House is an exclusive social club for people from all walks of life, which is part of its charm. Quite unlike many other london gentlemens club, Home House is a place to relax or the perfect spot for a working day. Home House is also hosting London’s best private members parties.
