By Joy Davenport

In Pioneer America, vintage paper dolls were a very important treasure since paper was limited. Picture your self as child living in a small cabin with very little to play with. You’re offered a paper doll, maybe two. You know how valuable they are and want to cherish all of them, so you find a special book and put them between pages or perhaps in a special box that you safeguard always for protection of your treasured paper-doll.

The paper-doll provides a very broad look at the cultures from all across the globe. They represent so many costumes, clothing, accessories and many other things of significance for historians. The obvious were the vintage paper dolls symbolizing royalty and for the children of royalty.

Paper dolls very first made an appearance in the 18th Century in Paris, during the rule of Louis XV. This is when toys first appeared in this French Society. On the other side of the English Channel, proper British printers printed the paper dolls. They’d mix fun and virtue by printing stories along with morals and values, on flat sheets of paper, and that made up the dolls. Vintage paper doll were then created as a magnificently lithographed full-color collection. They represented not only the well-known theater personalities but of the Royal families, including the House of Windsor and also the German Royal Family. It had been from that period the paper doll has been invented.

In 1866, an artist named Raphael Tuck, was probably the most widely known manufacturer of the paper doll. In December of 1940, Tuck’s German Manufacturing facilities were destroyed by a bombing, and with it destroyed all records, plates and documents. However his dolls were very easily identified by the trademark and series name and also number which was on back of each piece. The trademark style of this company has been the set of vintage paper doll costumes as well as interchangeable heads. He also made some “regular” dolls which includes Sweet Abigail, Winsome Winnie, My Lady Betty, Prince Charming, the fantastic Fairy Tale series and more. He continued to make the vintage paper doll collections well into the twentieth century.

During the beginning, possessing paper dolls would have been a privilege and just the children of the Royalty were able to have them. There were dolls which represents actors from the theater, stage, opera and even television. The period when the antique paper dolls were the most popular had been throughout the 1930′s to the 1950′s. This could be referred to as the “Golden Age of Paper Dolls.” Paper toys were probably the most inexpensive toys to have during the depression even though it was of a lesser quality of paper, due to the WWII.

Collecting antique dolls is exciting and can be achieved very cheaply. There are enough varieties to satisfy every collector. Venture back again in your memories of sitting down together with your paper dolls, enjoying with your friends.
