How To Save Money On Vehicle Expenses

By Nolan Tornes

While owning a vehicle in California is a necessity for most of us, the cost of ownership is often quite high. However, with few alternative transportation options, much of our income is used for various vehicle expenses. Here are a few ways to lower the yearly cost of vehicle ownership.

One of our big car expenses is paying for insurance, which is required by California law. There are definitely some easy ways to lower your insurance costs. First, get quotes from several different companies to determine which one will offer you the lowest rate. Another option would be to ask about obtaining both home and auto insurance from the same company, as this usually lowers both rates.

Another option is to carry only the required liability insurance, which covers damage to other vehicles and drivers if you cause an accident. This might be a good idea, particularly if your car is older than 10 years. You also should review your policy and rates. For example, maybe your rates are based on past driving habits. If you once commuted 30 miles and now work from home, for example, this could certainly lower your rates.

The price of fuel is enormous, particular in California, where gas is often more than $4 for each gallon. To cut these costs, shop around for the cheapest rates, which aren’t typically to be found at the big-name gas stations. If you belong to Costco, they often have low-cost gas stations, and if you also use a Costco credit card, you save even more. There are other credit cards that offer you cash rewards for all of purchases and sometimes more for gasoline purchases. Since you have to buy gas anyway, you might as well get a reward.

Other ways to reduce the amount of gas you burn include keeping your tires properly inflated and don’t store stuff in your car as the extra weight burns more fuel. If the weather is nice, don’t turn on the air conditioning and don’t let your car sit and idle unnecessarily. When you head out to run errands, map out your route to lower the amount of driving or try to avoid congested routes with a lot of stop and go traffic, which burns much more fuel.

When it comes time for your smog test, there are even ways to save a few dollars here. There are a few Berkeley smog check stations that offer a special discount for those who book their appointment online. This could be a savings of about $10, and booking the appointment ensures that you won’t have to spend extra time waiting for the smog test itself.
