Metal Detecting For Fun & Profit

By Juli Dunham

If you are at a park or the beach and you see someone with one of the metal detectors on a long pole, sweeping it between the two over the ground, what thoughts pass through your mind? Do you tell yourself, “Oh great, just what the world needs; another metal detecting freak”?.

Do you imagine her spending hours digging up pennies and old soda cans? Maybe you were with friends and the site of this particular person was great for a big laugh from everyone.

If this describes you, chances are good you will own a metal detector one day. Virtually all metal detecting hobbyists started out exactly like you. They would see people using their detectors, and scoff and make fun of them, but at the back of their minds, they had some questions.

How well do they work? Are they really sensitive? Just how far down will they have the ability to tell you there is metal in the ground? Maybe they are only finding change, but it can add up (find more on this forum). How much has this person found altogether? Has it paid for itself? What about jewelry? Did they discover any good jewelry? Where is there more stuff on the beach; in water or out from the water?

If you know anyone who has a metal detector you really should ask her to show you how it operates. Go out exploring for some hours, one day. You’ll likely be hooked from that time, forward. Do not ask your friend to loan her unit to you. Wars have been fought over much less than that.

The best places to go are anywhere groups of people walk, gather, or even, used to gather. Sites where county fairs are held are great (check out this Canadian directory for more resources). Parks and athletic fields, in addition to beaches are prime spots. Camp sites can be fruitful, especially when they are boy scout or girl scout camps, since those get used a lot.
