You should be having fun crafting with your children. This is the time when you get to be messy and creative and your kids get to make something out of absolutely nothing. Getting your childs creative juices flowing is important to their development. Most adults find craft time too difficult to handle. They’re worried about messes and everybody getting along. They will of course stress over whether the project is right for the group of kids they’ve chosen it for.

They wonder if they will be able to find the left handed scissors for little joey who can’t use the normal scissors. Here are some tips to help you have a happier craft time.

Do what you can to clean up as you and your kids work on your project. If a project involves cutting out lots of shapes, cut those first and then put the left handed scissors and extra paper away. Also, another example is using glue; just get everything ready, then glue, then put that up. The strategy is to do a little at a time as you’re progressing, then at the end of it you don’t have one great big mess to deal with. You can apply the same approach to cooking; so just do a little (cleaning) as you go, and at the end it’s just another relatively small cleaning to do.

This means that, often, you need to let them figure out for themselves, how to do something. If your kids are moving slow don’t get involved they will figure it out even if it takes a little longer than it would if you did help. It’s more important for them to do take their time and finish the project themselves. Of course this will take longer for them to do but the will have a great sense of accomplishment from finishing the project on their own. Try to be patient. Your level of patience will help you see just how fun the project can be.

Protect your children’s clothing. Old, adult sized t-shirts make great smocks and aprons for younger kids. If your kids are still very young, you can even let the craft in their undies if you feel it’s appropriate, etc. If your kids are a little too old, then you can let them wear an apron. Just take a look around because aprons can be found very just a few dollars. Protecting the clothing will save you hours of laundry later and you won’t have to worry about replacing anything if some paint or ink goes awry. If any of your kids are in fact using left-handed scissors, then if they should cut their shirt it’ll be ok.

only to have your daughter start crying and say "that’s supposed to be Grandpa!" A better approach to finding out what your child has created is to have them tell you about it. This way your son or daughter gets to talk all about how they made what they have made and you won’t risk hurting their feelings.

Kids don’t care if their craft is perfect. You won’t likely see Picasso or Stewart masterpieces coming from your crafts but they will still be fun. You will probably have globs of glue, stray marker scratches and little pieces of paper all over the place. The main point of doing crafts with your kids is to have fun. The more fun you make it the more fun they will have.
