There’s A Lot More To Craft Preparation Besides Left-Handed Scissors

By Bernard Watkins

You want to have fun but at the same time you need to think about so many things! You worry about keeping all of your kid happy. You are concerned with keeping your house from being torn apart. You worry about having the right stuff on hand (like left handed scissors for your left handed kids). Craft time for children should not be stress time for the preparer. We will discuss how to make craft time less stressful and more fun for everybody.

In the room where you will be doing your crafts, be sure to protect the surroundings in case there are any accidents. You can spread-out old newspapers or an old sheet on the floor to protect it, and also do the same if you’ll be working on a table. This will help you save time with clean up later on. It also keeps things (like your daughter’s left handed scissors) from going missing because they get put under something you won’t lift up again for months. Just taking that small step will help make things easier because it’ll be easier to keep an eye on things. Just imagine that when you’re all done everything is right there, and you can scoop it up and throw it away.

We know how it is, but it’s worth it to make the attempt to get your kids to help with the mess when you’re done. It’s just part of the crafting process, plus there’s nothing wrong with trying to instill positive habits in your children. You can present it as a game of cleanup. Make it a race to put the left handed scissors back into their boxes or bags. Who can organize the pencils and crayons the best and quickest. Who can find the most amount of trash? Add anything else like singing or dancing, or whatever. The thing to do is involve everyone, so all have fun – plus it goes faster.

Try to do your crafts in a big enough room. You want to have enough working space. Left handed kids will especially appreciate this because using left handed scissors usually means that they are accidentally bumping into other kids who are right handed. People are happier if they have enough room to work on things, plus it is a lot easier to stay organized. It’s just like any other situation, people confined to a small space will always begin to feel a little more pressure and stress. If you have room to spread out, things will be calmer and you won’t have to worry about as many spills or accidents.

Choosing a project that is age appropriate is a very good idea. If you give them something too hard to work on, they may become frustrated and then maybe avoid doing it in the future. Always avoid something that is significantly advanced for their age because that can be potentially damaging to them. There is a balance to this because if you give them a highly easy task to do, then they might get bored and then just want to quit and do something else. They may even be a little bit insulted by the idea of doing “baby” crafts.

The nice thing about doing crafts with kids is that, usually, there isn’t a lot of pressure to make something that is perfect. There aren’t any 6 year old Martha Stewarts that I know of. Probably you will find gobs of glue in random places, stray marker scratches and bits of paper too. The main point of doing crafts with your kids is to have fun. The more fun you have while you are doing a craft, the more fun your kids will have-even the kids who complain that their left handed scissors don’t cut as well as the right handed kids’ scissors.

One of the most fun times of day for a kid is craft time. You know how much children love to create. Adults, on the other hand… we adults are just to engrossed in our concerns and stresses of our lives. These tips should give you some help to have a better crafting time with your kids. After all, beyond making sure you have left handed scissors on hand, what is there to worry about?
