Is Vehicle Customization Right For You?

By Yves B. Geller

Vehicle customization is one of the hottest services in the automotive repair industry. Offered by body and specialty shops, it is extremely popular with younger drivers. In this article we are going to take a closer look at the options and accessories that are used in this exciting new service.

Before we go into the details, you may want to know exactly what vehicle customization is. This is a service that goes by several different names. Some automotive experts refer to it as vehicle customization or vehicle personalization, while others call it an automotive upgrade. No matter what you call it, the purpose is the same; to add something to a vehicle for some specific reason.

What are some of the reasons people opt for vehicle customization? The upgrades normally fall into one of these three categories: performance upgrades, aesthetic upgrades, or entertainment upgrades. We will take a look at each of these different categories.

Anything that changes the appearance of a vehicle is considered an aesthetic upgrade. This upgrade could be as simple as a basic paint job or as complex as detailed artistry. Many younger drivers opt for personal roof or hood designs on their vehicles. These are essentially tattoos for vehicles. And don’t forget about custom rims and tires. Specialty shops offer spinning rims that can sell for thousands of dollars or custom tires. Anything like this is considered an aesthetic upgrade.

Moving on, an entertainment upgrade is anything that adds or improves sound or video in your vehicle. Probably the most popular entertainment upgrade is the installation of custom audio equipment. Upgrade experts specialize in the latest CD, digital and satellite radio systems. They can also recommend effective speakers and subwoofers or mobile video. Yes, many people are installing television sets and even video game systems in their cars these days. They are particularly popular with families who take long trips. And for those long trips, a navigational system is yet another entertainment upgrade that can be installed by an expert.

Last, there are the performance upgrades. As you may already suspect, these jobs are usually the most expensive of all vehicle upgrades because it involves upgrading the vehicle’s engine. You might be wondering why a person would go to the trouble of upgrading the engine of a regular passenger vehicle. Why not buy a racing car in the first place? The fact of the matter is that vehicle upgrades are much less expensive than buying an actual racing car. Another benefit to upgrading the engine is the alterations can be made gradually, meaning they won’t have to be paid for all at once.

The most popular performance upgrades include: turbochargers, nitrous oxide tanks, superchargers, cat-back exhaust systems, fuel and ignition upgrades, and horsepower upgrades. The cost of any single improvement can be thousands, but the improvement in performance will not go unnoticed.

In our effort to categorize each type of vehicle customization upgrade, we left out a few options that don’t fit into any specific category. For example, window tinting might be considered an aesthetic upgrade to some, but aside from that it also is functional and serves a purpose much more than just a decoration.

Yves B. Geller authored this story. He is mainly a car hobbyist but he carries out his love for cars through vehicle customization. He believes it’s alright to use a train horn so long as it is used responsibly. It’s actually pretty easy to install an air horn to your car, truck or boat.
