Knives are crafted right in the middle of the prehistoric great outdoors, among man’s earliest adventurers, the hunters and gatherers. It was crafted to be used in gathering food, cutting raw materials for their dwelling needs and carving notes and symbols on rocks and caves to aid them in understanding and remembering things.

Stone Age people got their food supply and other means of sustenance from the prehistoric outdoors. However, it was not always as friendly to man. Truth is, it is home to many wild plants and animals, many of them far more stronger and powerful than man. Prehistoric outdoors is far more dangerous and unpredictable than today’s wild.

It is for this reason that knives became man’s primary tool for protection. As its role in man’s life changes, knives physical form also transformed through time. Gradually it became more efficient in protecting man from the unpredictability of nature and its own brutish tendencies.

As civilization changed how humans live, so did its consequences change the outdoors’ landscape. Knives, especially its larger incarnate, the sword, became an essential tool in its advancement. Man became more sophisticated and the outdoors reconfigured as civilization spreads. Human habitations developed agriculture, dug mines and built cities displacing the wild. Wilderness got itself pushed into isolated areas where human existence takes a lot more effort to survive

As man learned to live in the peace of homes and organized communities, knife went indoors and became a standard kitchen utensil. As the sword got replaced with shooting weaponry, knife became a popular home buddy, manufactured among spoons and forks, and used even in fine dining.

However, knives never actually left the outdoor. Although its role was reduced, it was still used as a side weapon by the military. As conquest, empires and colonialism became outdated, even its military role changed. From being a mainly outdoor combat equipment, it returned to its roots as an outdoor survival tool, used in navigating the wild, facilitating the establishment of encampments and help in the outdoor gathering and preparation of foods and protecting man from nature’s inherent unpredictability. Pretty much like old times; like its original purpose for coming into being.

Now with synthetic blades, ergonomic handles, sometimes fixed blades, sometimes foldable, sometimes sliding, sometimes automatic, and most of the time very safe to handle, knives one again became an indispensable companion to human adventurers as they continue to be fascinated by the nature that nurtured their specie throughout the ages.
