A Person And Breed Recommendations

By Olivia Hall

What one dog psychologist did was prescribe a box turtle in an effort to help a poodle fulfill its maternal instincts. A book about understanding your dog was written by this psychologist for he takes his work seriously. When it comes to the credentials of this doctor, he is an associate professor of psychology at local university and associate director for research at the local zoo and his book explains how animals are also individuals. A lot of things are usually assumed by people but he expresses himself honestly.

He talked about a young couple with a dog wherein the dog did not let the husband enter the bedroom at times. Whenever they fought, the dachshund owned by the couple would have a catatonic fit and this was mentioned in his book. The body language of dogs is similar to humans as he says and they usually develop like young children. When it comes to tolerating closeness, dogs like humans have different abilities in dealing with this.

What the doctor points out is how dogs develop through several stages and so getting a puppy is best done when it is between six and eight weeks old. It is not wise to get a puppy older than 10 weeks unless it has been raised with a lot of people around. It is necessary to see how well it interacts with other puppies before you buy a dog. Watch out for the most outgoing dog for it can be the most aggressive one.

He may or may not agree to a game of tug of war after investigating an old scarf or a glove that you have brought along. When a puppy is at five or six weeks, there is no need for any discipline training for he will only forget it but he will need some tender loving care as well as an exposure to a number of experiences that will enrich his environment.

Any undue trauma for the puppy should be avoided by the owners, as he mentions, including a visit to the doctor during the sensitive fear period at eight weeks. It is by 12 weeks when the dog has become emotionally bonded to his owner and even discipline training will not be able to break his spirit or attachment. When it comes to people in various situations, this doctor and holder of a veterinary degree and a doctorate in psychology from a London university has a number of recommendations to give.

If a family has children in the house then their best bet would be a golden retriever, when it comes to a young couple terriers work best, a schnauzer, a Yorkshire terrier, or a poodle will be great for apartment couples, and older couples will find a Yorkshire terrier, pekingese, or pug amazing. Based on the breed, it is not as easy to tell the temperament of a dog than in the past, he said. What he says to be the cause is less quality in breeding.

Cranks are what he calls dog breeders who get together in an effort of making changes in breed standards. People have a responsibility not to change standards without knowing the result, he says. Considering prize dogs, before they are named the best in the breed, there is emphasis today on the necessity of testing. This is in order to ensure that the winning dog is no zombie.
