Red Wines and Cigars

Red wines are oftentimes enjoyed along with a cigar. This is a particularly popular after dinner combo with a lot of cigar smokers. Your lighter, humidor and other hardware might be your mainstay cigar accessories, but what you enjoy with those cigars is just as important to the experience of smoking them.

Pairing a red wine and a cigar is not hard. Any kind of cigar goes with red wine, really. It’s more dependent upon which wine you’re drinking than anything else. The taste of a cigar-even a very heavy one-will be overpowered by the taste of a strong wine. You’ll want to go with a wine that has a mellower flavor so that it doesn’t overpower your cigars. Your cigar taste will be influenced by the wine, but you’ll still be able to taste it.

Since Cabernets are slightly more mellow than Merlots, as their aging process has been longer, you may enjoy a perfect blending with a Maduro cigar. There are many types of cigars with similar flavors as the Maduro, and these will all be good options if you are looking for a nice pairing that will allow you to enjoy your favorite red wine and a fine cigar.

Experimentation is going to be the key to your success when you are trying to find a great pairing for a red wine and the best cigars in your humidor. As mentioned, personal taste is going to be a huge factor in whether or not you enjoy the pairing.

Something that you might want to do is to keep a little notebook and make some notes about your pairing. Find the things that you enjoy about certain cigars or wines, and see how they pair. You should be able to find some good combinations this way. One thing is certain; you are going to have a good time coming up with these different combinations.
