Stamp Collecting can be a fairly inexpensive hobby to start. You can enjoy collecting stamps with limited financial resources. Here are 10 really low-cost ways to start stamp collecting.

Ask friends and family to send you mail with commemorative stamps. Commemorative stamps are generally larger than regular stamps and are issued to honor famous people, places, or events. Since these stamps are often issued in limited quantities, they have higher collectible value. If you inform your friends and family of your collection, they can buy commemorative stamps at the post office.

If you send out correspondence that includes self-addressed envelopes, use commemorative stamps on those envelopes. You will receive back the stamp whenever the envelope is sent back to you.

Ask people you know to hold on to their stamps for you. The majority of your friends and family will be happy to be of service if they know you are a collector.

If any of your friends get letters from foreign countries, ask them if they can save the stamps for you. Always be on the lookout for potentially good stamp contacts, and don’t be afraid to ask them to go through their mail for you before they throw away all the envelopes.

See if your friends receive office mail, and if so, ask them to save the stamps for you. A lot of companies receive mail from foreign countries and regularly dispose of stamps that could be highly collectible.

Inquire with your parents to see if they have any old letters with stamps. Don’t peel the stamp off the envelope. Doing this can cause tears or thin spots which ruin the stamp and make it less desirable to collectors. Remove the whole corner of the envelope without damaging the perforations, so that there will still be paper under the stamp.

If you know anyone else who collects stamps, you can see if they have some duplicates they can possibly sell you or let you have. Collectors often have duplicates in the thousands, and they are usually willing to give them away or sell them for a much lower price than one would find in stores.

Look for free stamps advertised by stamp companies. Free stamps are often offered along with “approvals,” an assortment of other stamps that you must either buy or return. And it is a good way to purchase stamps. Note, however, that you usually have to pay the return postage if you return the approval stamps.

See if there are any stamp clubs in your area. Clubs sometimes give away stamps as a prize, or they offer special deals on stamps for sale. Junior clubs and school are also sponsored by some of the stamp clubs.

Also, you can consider starting a stamp club if one is not already open in your area. All you will need to do is to get four of five people interested in exchanging stamps and ideas.

With free stamps and a few inexpensive accessories, such as a small album and a package of stamp hinges, even collectors with little money can have a great time.

No sense in waiting – stamps are out there, waiting to be collected.
