The early 90′s saw a rise in the popularity of cigar smoking in the US. The popularity can be linked to cigar smoking being immensely popular in celebrities and being considered more elite than cigarettes. Irrespective of the reason behind the rising popularity, what matters is that big brands have experienced tremendous sales of cigars and the US consumer market is growing.
Magazines like Cigar Aficionado glorify and glamorize the image of cigar smoking immensely by portraying cigar smoking as up-market and attractive. They have built an image of cigar smoking as slightly inappropriate for women and suggestively masculine. The image has garnered appeal for the typical American youngster. Regular Americans are found trying to incorporate a celebrity style of living in their day-to-day lives by being seen smoking cigars in lounges and gatherings.
Unlike cigarette smoking, cigar smoking has been considered more sophisticated. Cigarettes have always been considered slightly unglamorous and down market. Cigars have an elitist image and appeal people who are image conscious and would like to be seen around with expensive cigars and cigar accessories. Being seen around with a cigar in your hand reflects your societal status automatically.
Humidors are the most preferred style quotient amongst all cigar accessories. Their cost itself reflects the income bracket of the person who possesses one. Humidors can store and flaunt cigars in style. A good humidor can easily burn a hole in the pocket of the buyer and is generally a must in the homes of the elite.
Although the image of cigars is elitist, lately a number of websites have started offering cigars for discounted prices and has gradually increased the customer base.
This elite image of cigar smoking and now being easy on the pocket has contributed to cigars showing an increase in sales in the US.
