Vintage Bicycling & Movies Which Feature It

By Rob Sutter

With vintage bicycling climbing in terms of popularity, I believe that it is worth talking about it in many respects. It’s clear that it has an audience because of how much it blends different styles. Yes, these looks are very much classic but when you add in the fact that conventional methods of control are put into place, I think that these are some of the best worth investing money into. Films have shown biking in a number of ways and talking about a few examples could prove interesting.

The 80′s definitely strikes me in terms of the movies which were created at that time and “The Goonies” is easily one of the most recognizable which can be imagined. To me, it showed just how much imagination young people had at the time and they seemed to live through those in the Goon Docks, searching for buried treasure. The addition of two-wheeled rides only made the film that much greater, as if kids believed that they could go about such adventures of their own, too.

Going into a couple of decades later, though, 2004′s “Napoleon Dynamite” has definitely divided a number of people who enjoy comedies. For every one person who can see the film for the dumb fun it brings about, there is someone who simply cannot get past the supposed emptiness the movie possesses. However, one of the smaller yet recognizable moments of the movie was when Napoleon borrowed the bike of his friend in order to try out a small jump. In a show of comedy, he flubbed the attempt.

I think that “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” has been able to grab my attention mainly because of the ride Pee-wee Herman had in that movie. It was crafted just for that picture and after seeing just how outlandish it was, it wasn’t hard to see why. It’s not the first image that comes to mind when talking about vintage bicycling after all. It’s one which has definitely earned its spot in the memories of those who have seen the movie and it piqued my interest in companies such as Linus Bike, too.

I know that I have left out a couple of other shining examples, though, “E.T.” being just one of the major names. However, I wanted to give attention to those which haven’t been as looked at as this one. There are a number of movies which have featured vintage bicycling, or even another type, in a great way. It goes to show just how tremendous this particular hobby is and how much of a role it can have on the big screen, many examples serving as proof of this.
