5 Things To Do And See In Fuerteventura

By Jack Walker

Fuerteventura is one of the larger but less well known Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean near the coast of Africa; it’s the second largest island of them all. Throughout the year temperatures can reach a high of 35˚C (95˚F) during the summer months. The island’s main industries lie both in fishing and agriculture (vegetables and cereals).

Hit the Surf

The island is well known for its sandy beaches and water sports. Its coastline has strong trade winds and water swells that makes surfing here a fantastic experience. Scuba divers, fishermen and sailors are always drawn to these amazing waters all throughout the year; you may even catch a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean’s residents that include whales, dolphins and turtles.

See the Animals

Take a trip to Oasis Park where you can see a variety of animals ranging from spiders to hippopotami and giraffes. Don’t forget to bring a camera to take a photo of the islands indigenous animals – goats, donkeys and camels. There are many attractions for all who visit the Oasis Zoo that include kissing a sea lion at the zoo’s sea lion show, watching colourful parrots doing acrobats at the parrot show or watching a bald eagle fly the skies in the birds of prey show.

Take a Jeep Safari

Further explore the island in the comfort and security of a jeep. On your journey you drive along the hiking trail in Morros Bayuyo, the landscapes formed by volcanic lava. You will also pass through and discover scenic villages that include Villaverde where you can visit the Casa de los Coroneles; a centre known for its cultural activities.

Have you tried Sport Fishing?

Learn how to fish from the professionals and take the whole family along with you. You’ll be departing from Corralejo’s Harbour and with the help of the local fishermen find the best spots to land that elusive catch of legend. If you’re into fishing the trip is a must, as the waters are literally teaming with fish from sharks, tuna and rays to that dream catch the blue marlin. The price for the 5 hours normally includes full use of the fishing equipment, food and drinks and most importantly insurance for all who accompany you on the trip.

Canarian Wrestling

One traditional sport that is still regularly played on the island of Fuerteventura is Canarian wrestling. The aim of the sport is to make your opponent touch the floor with any part of their body (excluding your feet). Matches can last up to 2 minutes. There are many wrestling clubs scattered around the towns in Fuerteventura. When viewing from the crowd you will notice that there are no weight categories, and watching some matches can be very interesting, as the bigger person doesn’t always win.
