Autumn Woollies For Women This Season

When the temperature drops, you reach for your trusty knitwear – but fear not – it doesn’t have to be drab or dowdy as women’s designer fashion heralds a new era of kaleidoscopic prints making bold statements this winter.

Simple navy, red, cream, and black do the rounds in knitwear this autumn/winter; not only have they been spotted on Ralph Lauren’s Denim & Supply Intarsia Crewneck Sweater, but also Karen Millen’s 176 Stripe waterfall-neck cardigan.

New York’s Timo Weiland bring contrast from colour-blocking crews and coax the neglected turtle-neck back out of its shell with some sleek cuts and spot designs. Capes and colour-blocking get friendly with Vero Moda’s vibrant cowl-neck in a choice of tones and ponchos get optically active with Navaho and Aztec patterns or Rebecca Taylor’s cashmere-blend stripy tasselled poncho. Jaeger raise some cartoon fun with their ‘Olive Oil’ style fitted ribbed jumper with delicate silk white collar and Missoni add their trademark zigzag to crochet-knit for jumper and cardigan modes. Meanwhile, animal magic comes from the motifs of French Connection’s Meow Sequin jumper and Joseph’s Tiger Print roll-neck, Aftershock’s snake-skin print Giselle petit fitted cardigan and J.W. Anderson adds a shearling trim to the waistline of a satin, ribbed and check-panel wool sweater straight from London Fashion Week.

Won Hundred get long and loose in women’s fashion with their wool mix Andrea Sweater with a boyfriend fit that attentively suits a number of on-trend looks and layers, while other relaxed styles see cardis from White + Warren or the hooded and long Ottawa Argyle cardigan by MaxMara Studio, fitted stripes from Missguided or the chunky knit and long length with Fair Isle patterning and kangaroo pocket on Superdry’s Hutch Hooded Knit. Lighter knits come from A.L.C’s Wool & Paper striped demi-sheer jumper, Tom Tailor Denim’s Structured Pullover and Giambattista Valli’s bright hue wool and alpaca Fine-Knit Sweater.

Knitwear is not just about hefty jumpers; Miss Selfridge show what can be done with a pair of knitting needles with their houndstooth skirts, and this season’s must-have pattern the Fair Isle, clads itself on Sweater Pants by Free People. The wide-legged knitted playsuit by ASOS and Down Under boot specialists, Ugg, giveaway more knitted goodies in their Cardy collection.

Team your long knits with skinnies and ankle or knee-high boots and look to a summer favourite to feminise chunky knits as the Maxi skirt proves it’s not a one-season wonder and is tonally toning down to neutrals and larger colour-blocks from the likes of Won Hundred and mingling happily with tights and leggings from Wolford or Falke. Balance the look by finishing with platform brogues from Asos or sleek ankle boots from Parisian favourites, Sessun, for some fabulously knitted fun.

Occasionally chunky knitted jumpers feek very uncomfortable beneath men’s jackets, but opt for a fine wool sweater and you’ll have none of that unnecessary chunkyness. This winter get involved with layering in designer menswear is all about and fine knitwear is easily apart of that.
