Holiday road travel at near record high, says AAA

By Cornelius Nunev

Expect holiday traffic to be at its greatest since the Good Recession started, according to the American Automobile Association. As the economy has improved, so more and more people are taking to the roads for holiday travel. Motorists are advised to factor heavy traffic into travel plans and to be careful.

Amount of travel

There is a 1.6 percent boost from last year in the amount of people travelling for Christmas and New Year holiday to about 93.3 million people. That number is also only about 400,000 people short of 2006 when the most recent record was hit. In fact, it is about 25 percent of the American population, according to the AAA.

About 84.4 million people will be driving at least fifty miles during the holidays. That is about 90.5 percent of holiday tourists.

All kinds of traffic expected

With the bad winter weather and the increased traffic, there is bound to be a bunch of accidents on the road and way more drivers to get around. Make sure you are patient on the road and when attempting to get gasoline at the fuel station. Patience will surely help everyone and keep you safer on the road.

You may want to get a winter checkup before the trip at a dealer such as Magic Nissan Motors Everett, Wash.

Cost of gas

This quarter, gasoline prices have decreased a ton to about the same price as last year at this time. It is also more expensive to fly to destinations that you need at times you want. That means that people are driving more because of the increased price of flying and decreased cost of gasoline.

The trade group Airlines for America estimates that 15 million Americans will travel by air this year between Dec. 17 and Jan 6. The group expects 86 percent of all seats to be filled on airplanes between those dates. That is up from 85 percent in 2011.

Price of lodging vehicle

Car rental rates have increased to about $56 a day, compared to last year when it was only about $40 a day on average.

The cost of hotels and motels with AAA’s three diamonds rating are $3 more a night at $129 a night too. That means lodging is more costly too.

Many projections considered

Many projections were made by HIS Global Insight for the AAA study. It also considered the apprehensive economy and responses from 655 Americans.
