Great Ideas For Maternity Costumes

By Julie Ingham

Maternity Costumes? Really? These are two of responses I sometimes get when talking about my costume ideas. It’s amazing how many think that it’s to difficult or even impossible to dress up when pregnant.

They couldn’t be more wrong. It’s the perfect time to get super creative and finding that special maternity costume will be so much fun.

One quick and easy costume to make is the pea pod. Basically you just put on an all green outfit. Wear a shirt or a sweater that you can put a vertical slit on to show your belly. Then you simply just paint your belly green.

Another great idea is the pregnant man. Im sure you have read about him or even seen him on Oprah and now you can make sure he will join the party. Put on a mustache, dress like a man your all set.

The Fish Bowl. I personally love this one. Paint a fish (or two) on your belly and some bubbles. If you are really in a creative mood then perhaps even a treasure chest or a plant. Then just wear a white or light blue shirt that is a bit see-through.

If you want to paint something really simple you can just paint a peace sign or a smiley on you belly and then dress like a flower child. Shirts or tees with loud prints and some wacky pants should to the job. Especially if you add some wild hair and flowers to the mix.

Watermelon Farmer. Paint your belly like a watermelon. Green with light green stripes. Then just dress like a typical farmer would.

How does a pregnant school girl with her priest sound? Dress your husband up as a priest and then you can put on a shirt, tie, knee socks and a short skirt. The noughty catholic school girl will definately grab some attention.

Beach bum ” if you are proud of your pregnant figure then this could be the perfect costume for you. Paint your belly like a beach ball and wear a bikini. Then you can pretend like you are carrying your beach ball around. Just make sure that you don’t get cold!

There is of course an easier way of doing things, especially if you are getting close to labor. You could buy a maternity costume rather than creating one. It’s not as expensive as one might think. You can get a great costume for as little as $30-$40.
