Holidaying in the UK

By Jake Stevens

We all want the best value for money from our holidays, especially with the current economy. Holidaying right here in the UK may not offer you the climate, weather and skiing opportunities that you will find abroad, but when it comes to getting the most for what you pay there are some really great holiday destinations right on the doorstep.

If you’re after a sunny beach holiday, then look no further than Cornwall’s very own Ibiza, Newquay. This town is a surfer’s paradise and enjoys a climate during the Summer months not dissimilar from the South of France, meaning that there’s plenty of sun to be enjoyed. During the days you can head out to the water to try your hand at some surfing, before retiring to the sand to chill out during the warm afternoons. Take advantage of Newquay’s party atmosphere during the long Summer evenings by checking out some of the many bars and clubs. Newquay’s growing popularity amongst holidaymakers means that a number of the top DJs perform here regularly, cementing its reputation as a party town. However, if all the clubbing gets a little too much, you can always venture out into the nearby Cornish countryside and discover some of the many parks and natural heritage sights on offer.

For a more relaxed family holiday, then consider heading off to Wales – a really stunning country which can offer you so much more than everything you’re used to. There are some really great sights to visit here, such as Snowdonia, in North Wales. This is without doubt one of the most breathtaking locations in Europe. Covering 800 square miles, it is home to the Snowdon Mountain as well as some really spectacular scenery. This is the highest mountain in Wales, which stands at 3560 feet (1085 metres), and is a popular goal for many hikers – it’s definitely well worth the effort, with some stunning views from the top. You can take the Snowdon Mountain Railway to the peak from Llanberis too – this railway is practically a Welsh institution in itself, having operated for over 100 years.

For city-lovers the UK has plenty to offer. The capital, London, is one of the top tourist destinations in the world, visited by millions upon millions each year and with so much history, culture and excitement, it’s easy to see. However, for something a little different the city of Edinburgh in Scotland is a tantalising city, renowned for festivals. Visit in the summer or winter and you’ll be in for a treat, and with its own airport, Edinburgh is extremely accessible.

For a quiet, picturesque experience in the North of England, head to the Lake District. This is a stunning place to visit all year round – rent a cottage and enjoy long walks around the lakes and through the breathtaking countryside, and enjoy some great food at a country pub. This is the perfect choice for an idyllic holiday that won’t break the bank.
