How did Ibiza become the world’s clubbing mecca?
By Latham Jamal
For years, Ibiza has been known as the clubbing capital of the world. When you think of the island it more than likely conjures up images of all night parties, famous DJs and superclubs pumping out house music. However, this clubbing haven’s origins were a little more modest.
Before the 1960s, as a destination it was relatively unheard of. As the hippy culture grew and backpacking travellers were looking for new, chilled out places to explore, Ibiza became a popular choice due to its easy location near to Spain and the almost constant good weather. It remained a relaxed place to be until cheap flights started to come to prominence in the following few decades, with more and more tourists flocking to the island every year.
It was not until 1973 that the first club opened up on the island in the form of Pacha- the now world famous venue. What many people don’t know is that this wasn’t the first branch of the club, as one had been running near Barcelona for the past 6 years. Nevertheless, Ibiza’s Pacha soon took the top spot and became a favourite destination for clubbers to return to year after year.
In the following years, more and more clubs began to open their doors, serving visitors with the all-night summer dance parties that the island is famous for. For four months every year this tiny paradise is overrun with people seeking fun, sunshine and the best dance music on offer anywhere.
That’s not to say Ibiza hasn’t changed with the times though. In recent years the island has started to cater for some different tastes, running more events for different genres of music. Since 2005 the Ibiza Rocks summer festival has given the stage to a variety of alternative acts, like Soulwax and the Arctic Monkeys. This ever growing choice for party seekers has only served to cement Ibiza’s reputation as THE place to go for a good time.
