The Canary Islands have become a very popular holiday destination for people all around the world but especially with people elsewhere in Europe. The group of islands offer high temperatures all year round and it takes just a short flight from anywhere in Europe to get to the islands. The canaries have some fantastic beaches and scenery and a lot of areas have been developed to make them ideal for tourists.

The Canary Islands were formed in a very unusual way as under water volcanoes erupted to create what are known as volcanic islands. The Canary Islands are situated on a hot spot and the existing islands were formed millions of years ago when volcanoes erupted and gradually the magma and debris built up from the ocean floor. The height of the magma and debris gradually rises until it is above sea level and this is what happened in the case of the Canary Islands.

Islands are formed in this way because as the lava flows out it doesn’t spread. Instead the lava rises continuously higher as it has nowhere to go except for on top of the lava which is already there. The water cools the lava slowly and it becomes much thicker until the eruption stops and the process speeds up even more. Without the heat source provided by fresh lava the cooling rate is much faster and the lava sets hard over a long period of time.

The volcanoes around the area of the Canary Islands are still a threat although they do not erupt very often at all. The last notable eruption lasted six years from 1730 and was on the island of Lanzarote. The eruption did a great deal of damage but the responsible volcano is now classed as dormant and has been for some time.

A new eruption began in 2011 off the coast of El Hierro which many believed would either create a new Canary Island or eventually connect with El Hierro. The eruption began just 70 metres off the coast of the island and debris and lava was being shot high into the air around it.
