One of the most visited cities in the country, there’s a very good reason for the popularity of York. If you’ve got a hotel booked and you’re wondering what to do with yourself on your visit, here are a few suggestions. No matter what your interests, York has something to offer.

York Minster dominates the city centre and you’ll find that the city is pretty much built around it. The Minster is one of the finest cathedrals in Britain and having been renovated not so long ago, it now lacks the scaffolding which obstructed views for quite a while. Ever since, it has looked better than ever.

There is also the Jorvik Viking Centre and the York Dungeon. The Jorvik Viking Centre has been a major attraction for many years now, offering visitors the opportunity to walk through the town as it was when it was founded by the Vikings. York Dungeon is similar, offering tours highlighting the town’s murkier past featuring actors.

Railway enthusiasts should check out the National Railway Museum, which features over a million items, including the Mallard. While, for culture, head to York Art Gallery which features some major paintings from the likes of LS Lowry and David Hockney.

But York isn’t just about the sights. The city is also a great place to wander about. The Shambles is an old, narrow shopping street where the buildings lean in at you, while pubs and restaurants are plentiful.

It’s possible to take a tour of York Brewery, where you can see Dark Knight, Yorkshire Terrier and Guzzler being made. You should be able to find these beers at Last Drop Inn on Colliergate and there are dozens of other pub options as well. With North Yorkshire famed for its breweries, York is particularly good if this kind of thing appeals to you.
