7 Steps to Take Straight Away if Your Home is invaded by Pests

By Darren K. Thompson

Pests not only cost the economy thousands of dollars because of the damage they cause, but they’re also notorious for carrying diseases which can be passed on to humans. Considering that in most cases pests are never seen, home owners may have a pest problem and not even be aware of it. On the other hand, if you’ve seen droppings from rats or mice, your pest problem is more than likely far worse than you believe.

Step 1: If you believe you have a pest problem then you should carefully inspect the inside of your home as well as the outside. Concentrate on all those areas which pests tend to prefer such as trash cans, dripping taps, dirty drains and anywhere else where pests could have access to food and water. Remember, pests search for food and water and if you’re willing to supply it for them, they’re going to move in. Termites are another reason for concern, not only in Sydney, but all over Australia and all home owners should consider having a building inspection done in order to determine whether or not you have an invasion.

Step 2: The old adage, prevention is better than cure, is especially true with regards to pests so be sure to empty the garbage frequently. After returning home with groceries, get rid of the bags and bits of cardboard as soon as possible as both are favourites with cockroaches for laying eggs. Furthermore, by not having any wooden items leaning against the outside walls, you’ll be minimizing the chances of termites coming in.

Step 3: Properly identify your pest problem because treatment can depend on the type of bug, cockroach, termites, ants or rodents that are the cause. Save a specimen, in the event you need to call in a professional pest control service. If you have termites, you may need to have a termite inspection done by a professional to determine the amount of damage and treatment options.

Step 4: Preventing wooden items from coming into contact with the ground will minimise termite invasion, while repairing all holes and cracks around the home will make it more difficult for pests to gain entry. Special attention should be given to holes and cracks which are in the vicinity of plumbing pipes, drains and etc.

Step 5: Find out what the various treatment options are for your specific problem. For example, if you have mice or rats, you may want to lay down a few traps in addition to any chemical approach. Remember though, as far as most pests are concerned, treatment will have to be repeated because of eggs hatching at a later stage. For this reason, the majority of people hire a professional pest control service.

Step 6: While not much action is required at this stage, it is however vital that you do regular inspections in order to prevent another infestation due to eggs hatching. In the case of rodents, watch for signs that could suggest babies are around as it won’t take long for them to reach the age where they’ll start breeding.

Step 7: Make sure you keep any documents and recommendations of the treatment. If you have a termite inspection and treatment done by a professional service, you could need these guarantees and assessments if you decide to sell your home. The important thing is to call in a professional, if other treatments are not working, as the problem will get continually worse. In the case of termites, professional treatment will be necessary, and it is better to have inspections and treatments done, sooner than later.
