An Introduction Of Plumber Training Course

By Robert Harvard

There is a lot of training to become a master plumber that a person must take in order to become an expert in his field. A plumber training course is only one part of the training, since plumbing is such an active, hands on career.

If you want to get a career in plumbing, despite the stereotype of an overweight man as a typical plumber, plumbers need to be physically agile and strong in order to do the job. If they are not, they will not be able to lift and maneuver the pipes around, nor will they be able to get into the spaces and open valves that they need to be able to reach.

Steps of Training to be a Plumber

The online training is popular. Plumber training courses can be found online or at various colleges, especially technical colleges. Plumber training courses contain the basic information that plumbers need to get started in the field. These courses introduce the aspiring plumbers to the type of math and science courses needed to do the calculations in planning and fixing plumbing systems. They alert new plumbers to new technology in the field, such as digital plumbing, devices that allow for automatic actions such as flushing or turning a faucet on and off. They also give an introduction to the materials used in plumbing, as well as how to read schematics and blue prints, so that problem areas can be discovered and reached in homes and businesses.

Plumber training courses eventually lead out into the field, where the hands on training begins under the supervision of a licensed Master or Journeyman plumber. This training lasts for at least two years, which is the amount of time that most state laws require in order for a plumber apprentice to be eligible to take the Tradesman plumbing exam, the lowest level of licensure for a plumber.

During the training as an apprentice, the plumber learns to use the tools of the trade, both hand tools and power tools. They also get training on the different types of pipe, fittings and other supplies that are needed on various jobs. In addition, they get experience reading schematics for various appliances so that they can fix them, such as dish washers, washers, and garbage disposals. The hands on part of the plumber training course is the most essential, since it gives the apprentice plumbers the chance to face the common problems in the field so that they gain experience, yet have the safety of being under the direct supervision of a Master or Journeyman plumber.
