Antique Mantle Clocks

By Nazima Golamaully

There aren’t many types of collectibles more stimulating and fascinating than an antique mantel clock.

They have been in production since as far back as the 1750s, but mantel clocks remain some of the most handsome timepieces ever made. Mostly small and metal-faced, these mechanical clocks have sit gracefully on the mantel right above your fireplace, ticking away with their metal workings. Traditional American ones have a wooden case and a very distinctive look. The very flamboyant antique mantle clocks are usually the French taste.

Those made in the United States usually had the kind of chimes that went off every thirty minutes. These antiques understandably must be wound on regular basis to keep them working, just like many mechanical contraptions.

Many that you find in American homes have been passed down through genealogies. Through the 19th and 20th Centuries they were pretty popular among home furnishings. eBay and other auction websites, as well as various antique stores have them for sale in good numbers.

In the United States, there was Seth Thomas and numerous other makers who manufactured them back then. They are still made in the US today by Howard Miller and a few other countries.

You’d want to be sure you are buying a true antique when you purchase these pieces anyhow. It is not unusual to have one that was recently made being presented like an authentic antique simply because it looks like it.

The internet is one good way to determine that a mantel clock is a genuine antique. You can find makers’ names, plaques, and serial numbers of the clocks on more than a few websites.

They will be worth more if they are working. Should you happen to have one those antique mantel clocks that aren’t working anymore, you could call on a professional clockmaker to help you fix it. There are clockmakers in most major cities and some clockmakers do advertise on line.

How much you will have to spend on it, or if you should bother at all – these are things that the clockmaker can tell you. Many clockmakers buy old clocks and rebuild or repair them so you might be able to sell an old clock that doesn’t work.
