Because antique rugs come from all around the world it’s important to know what is out there an available.

Persian rugs are some of the most widely appreciated rugs in the world. Antique rugs from Persia, or modern day Iran, can date from a period as far back as 500 years B.C. Persian rugs are a vital part of the culture of the country and weaving them has always been considered an art form. Antique Persian rugs are characterised by bright colours and luxurious fibres. They are prized for their intricate designs.

Oriental antique rugs are another rug that is popular for collectors. These rugs come from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey, China, India, Nepal, and other places. The designs found on the rugs are unique and creative. They feature very soft fibers that last for years. The colors on an oriental rug allows them match with any dcor.

Antique Chinese rugs are usually constructed of a pile made of wool or silk, with cotton backing. The knots here are quite dense, so such rugs are quite rough and have more pile than most other antique rugs. Some particular antique Chinese rugs include the rare, valuable rugs from the Ningxia region and small Baotau rugs. The latter are also quite rare since they were not made for very long.

Another popular collector is the Anatolian rugs. They are beautifully designed and colored to attract your attention. These rugs are from several different regions including Turkey. One example of the Anatolian rugs is the Kars Rugs. These are from the eastern section of Anatolia but they are different from the Anatolian rugs in several ways. They feature dragons as their main design on the rug. Anatolian Konya Rugs re designed with geometrical designs as the main attraction. Ladik Rugs feature such designs as tulips which are viewed in bright colors such as red, blue and yellow.

Hand-knotted, antique Turkmen rugs from West Turkestan are hand-knotted and flat in the weave. Turkmen prayer rugs are particularly appreciated.

Buying an antique rug is a great investment. Beware of imitation rugs that are sold by dealers and private sellers. Always obtain a certificate of authenticity when you purchase from a dealer.

If you are buying an antique rug for your home keep in mind that the fibers on an antique rug may not be strong enough to endure everyday wear. Keep antique rugs in a room that is not used with high traffic to preserve its beauty.
