Avoid The Most Common Mistakes In Decorating

By Abbie Osborne-Wilson

There are some very common mistakes made when decorating your home. You can avoid them by following the tips below. This will ensure that you get the right look every time.

Decorating Mistake #1: Clutter- If your room is covered in clutter, it won’t matter what design you choose. Clutter distracts the eye from beautiful decor and makes a house appear unkempt and uncared for. Before you begin any decorating project, give your space a thorough cleaning. Go through papers, toys, books, and magazines that tend to stack up around the house. Throw away things you no longer need and donate what can be used by others. After all the clutter is cleared away, you can begin your decorating project.

Mistake in Decorating #2: Do not use white paint on your walls. If you don’t want to attract attention to stains and streaks then you need to choose another color besides white. Having white paint on the walls is not a relaxing atmosphere. Try using other colors such as yellow, ivory or even eggshell.

Mistake #3: Beware of imitation flowers. If you are going to use floral arrangements in your kitchen you want the arrangement to be like real. Get some help from the florist near you to create a great artificial arrangement without looking artificial.

Mistake in Decorating #4: The same color is old and boring. If you are using one color then chances are your room will seem drab and boring. Choose one color and accent it with another color. You usually choose a bright color to be your accent color and your main color to be a neutral color. But what is appealing to you is what is important. Select the color that makes you feel good.

Mistakes in Decorating #5: Forgetting the Floor- Many people completely forget about the floor when they do home decorating projects. They paint the walls, hang pictures, add new furniture, hang curtains, and decide the project is complete. Unfortunately, no room decorating project is complete without a little attention to the floor.

When you decorate your room, bring in some softness and color with the help of an area rug. You can find rugs in a variety of shapes and colors, so you don’t have to worry that a rug would clash with your design. Even if your floors are covered in carpet, an area rug is a great way to break up a space and give definition to a design. Don’t neglect area rugs when you redecorate.
