5 Traps That Most Parents-To-Be Fall Into
Are you expecting a baby soon? There is so much to prepare, but it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and make mistakes. Here are some really common ones to avoid before the big day.
Firstly, don’t worry about all the things that will be new to you. Think back to when you were a child. walking, talking, riding a bike…the list of new skills was endless. Did you worry about them? No, you just got on with acquiring those skills. No new parent ever starts off knowing how to do anything, but everyone manages – and so will you. Worrying about this is a waste of your precious energy.
The second error that lots of moms to be make in the run up to that all important due date is not resting enough. Sarah Harding from London thought it would be OK to move house 3 weeks before her due date. In spite of being told to do the minimum, the inevitable upheaval of this experience was more than she could cope with. She attributes her early labor to moving house at this time. Not all 8-month pregnant women move house, but too many work beyond what is right for them. Listen to your body and obey!
Number three: listening to other people’s birth stories. Every mother can recount giving birth in glorious – sometimes gory – detail. If anything went wrong, describing it all might help her make sense of the experience, but it certainly won’t help you. The truth is that nobody can prepare for childbirth on an emotional level. It’s important to remember that your birth experience may be far better than you expect.
The fourth mistake is to want it all ‘just so’. Whether it’s your birth plan or the perfect stroller, the days of being in complete control of every aspect of your life are numbered. Babies equal chaos: embrace this fact and fight the habit of perfectionism.
The final error of judgement is spending too much on your baby’s nursery. If you’re on a budget, avoid nursery sets. Instead, create a warm welcoming environment with a nursery wall mural or giant stickers.
So these are five of the biggest errors that many parents-to-be commit. How many of them are causing you needless stress?
