Babies are precious. A neonatal nurse can help them to obtain a better start in life. Sometimes babies are born before their due date. This oftentimes results in babies that are too small in size. Or, it results in babies that are too sick to survive without extra medical support. A neonatal nurse is there to make sure that both types of babies are given a better chance of survival. It does not matter if a baby was born premature and just needs a few days of extra care. Or, it could be a baby that was born with a serious medical condition or birth defect. Neonatal nurses are trained to take care of these babies and nurse them back to health.

With a bachelor’s degree, two to three years of training and a state certification examination, you could be on your way to a rewarding career in the neonatal nursing profession. This article is going to outline the three levels of neonatal nurses.

The first level of neonatal nurse is responsible for the care of healthy newborn babies. Years ago, there was such as thing as a hospital nursery where newborns where kept while their mothers recovered from labor. However, this does not exist any longer because companies are trying to find ways to cut down on healthcare and hospital expenses. Instead of newborn babies residing in hospital nurseries, they now spend this time in the room with their new mothers. This means that companies are able to save more money by not paying the salaries of neonatal nurses. The numbers of level one neonatal nurses are quickly dwindling.

The level two neonatal nurse takes care of healthy babies who were born prematurely. Many times these babies are not suffering from major illnesses. They are just too little or weak to live outside of a hospital or healthcare environment. They might need something as simple as specialized feedings. However, all they need is a little extra healthcare before they are allowed to go home with their parents.

The level three neonatal nurse has a job that is harder and more stressful than the other two levels. You will see a level three neonatal nurse working in an intensive care unit for infants that need specific care. She is responsible for caring for newborns that need special attention that level one and level two nurses cannot supply. But, all three types of nurses should make sure that new mothers understand how to care for their babies. So, neonatal nurses are responsible for taking care of newborns and new mothers.

Lastly, three level of neonatal nurses provide treatment on three levels. Because a lot of new policy changes, level one nurses are small in numbers. Level two nurses take care of premature babies who are perfectly healthy, but they just need a little bit of attention before they are released. Level three nurses work in various areas taking of very sick babies who need advanced care. All levels of nurses must not only take of sick babies, but they also have to train parents on how to take care of them. The neonatal profession is very satisfying indeed.
