Important Tips Before Going Rug Shopping

By Abbie Osborne-Wilson

Shopping for the right area rugs suitable for your home can be a walk in the park if you already know what to buy. It can get overwhelming and later on confusing to look at so many choices. Arming yourself with essential information and a firm decision will make your shopping trip stress-free.

Here are the following points to consider:

When you are looking at area rugs, do not let your budget get in your way. This is an investment and only if the one you choose is absolutely unaffordable; keep looking. There is such a huge selection of area rugs, you will surely find one that looks good and also fits your budget. Narrow your selection down to your most favorite before worrying about the cost.

What is your objective for putting a rug? Is it to create a warm, cozy ambiance or is to liven up the room? Rugs with a dark tone bring sophistication, coziness and warmth to the room. This color works best for big rooms because it creates a sense of intimacy, narrowing down the too big space. Meanwhile, bright and light colors are for brightening up a room. The lighter shades are ideal for a smaller room as they enlarge the room making it look more spacious.

Placement – deciding on where to place the area rug can also help you make the right choice. The center of the room means it will be the centerpiece, a focal point. Therefore, it must be attractive. The pattern and the design can seal the deal because even if a rug is dark-colored, its design can give it its appeal. A bigger rug is needed for using it as a furniture base, particularly if it’s for a dining set or living room furniture. The rug must fit well to match with the furniture.

Flooring – an area rug as floor covering can serve a dual purpose. First, as an accessory for beauty and second, as a floor protection. Choosing an area rug should not only complement the other furnishings but the floor as well. It is stuck to the floor, after all, so they must jive well. If you wish to make it as a floor partner, choose a rug that can blend well with your flooring. For instance, hardwood floor is better highlighted with dark colors or use a similar tone with the floor to have a balanced look. Tile floor can be accented with a neutral or earth-toned area rug.

If your purpose is to highlight the floor or conversely to draw attention away from the floor; this needs to be considered in your choice. To highlight the floor you need to choose an area rug that is perhaps a solid color and must be tone on tone so it blends with the floor. This will bring out the character of the flooring.

Price – set a tentative budget. Seriously, you wouldn’t have a tough time shopping for your choices. Area rugs are so diverse and abundant in the market that finding the cheapest or the most expensive is a breeze. You will surely find the rugs that comfortably meet your means. If your preferred rugs are too costly for your budget, there are numerous alternatives in design, size and materials. You will not go lacking with all the available area rugs.

Look at your home with sharp eyes and a keen interest for improvement before buying your area rugs. In doing so, you will have a clear mind as to what suits your home the best.

Keep up to date with decorating with rugs trends and enhance your home with cream colored area rugs.
