Make Mine Southern!

By Abbie Osborne-Wilson

What makes a Southern theme likeable? Three things are for certain – it’s cozy, inviting and pretty! The flowers, floral prints, farmhouse appeal, pastel and other light colors, soft textures, airy rooms and the relaxing ambiance that go with a Southern style are too hard to resist. With a few decorating tips, you can make your home into your own country get-away.

Be generous with the use of fabrics. Country style is about textures – soft, lush, smooth and comfy. This is one factor that makes a country home cozy. The presence of fabrics makes a space more inviting. Notice how curtains and quilts are country home staples.

Neutrals are the shades you’ll most often see in a country home. Walls are often done in ‘soft’ colours like beige or light peach, with much of the detail coming from things like stamped borders. Earthy or farm-themed designs like vines or chickens are the designs most often used for the border stamps. Using fruits as decor can also add a lot to the farmhouse theme: a beautiful bowl full of artificial apples should already give you the effect you want.

The furniture are a million miles away from what we would call sleek and chic. Country home furniture are old-fashioned. Vintage is in in this theme. If you have an old cabinet or an antique lampshade, the better. Such items will add to the authenticity of a country home idea. If you have none such items, head to the flea market and you’ll find pieces that will look amazing in your “country home.”

Another factor that gives coziness to country homes is the use of area rugs. You will see that area rugs are everywhere from the porch, entryway and living room to the patio, kitchen and stairway. There’s no lack of area rugs in a country-styled place. These decorative pieces give warmth as well as an appealing look to the entire space.

Finish the decorating project by adding some accessories reminiscent of the country lifestyle. Think of artworks about nature and animals; fresh flowers and plants, decorative farm items such as cowbell and rake, and other things you can think of that immediately brings to mind the rural life. If you feel the need for country music, go ahead and have your fill. It will make your design theme as close to real life as it can get. Howdy!

Keep up to date with decorating with rugs trends and enhance your home with southwestern style area rugs.
