Adding Contemporary Design Into Your Home

By Abbie Osborne-Wilson

A lot of the modern design or contemporary look that is out there can be a very neutral color, and doesn’t have a lot of detail too it. But sometimes if you add this look into your home, it will feel cold and sterile. In fact taking the modern look to that sort of extreme will normally leave you with a very plain room; however you can make it a bit less sterile by adding some color and textures to the room. Try the below steps to see if it will help your room stay contemporary but be a bit less cold.

Begin with color. Contemporary color palettes are cool and neutral; brown, cream, white, and taupe. This does not mean that your entire home needs to look like a bowl of milk. Use these colors as a basic foundation. When your room’s background is neutral, you have the entire color palette at your disposal for splashes of brighter color in accessories. For instance, if you have pale cream walls and wood flooring, a brightly colored rug can make a fabulous statement. Just make sure you don’t overdo the boldly colored accents. Remember, contemporary design is all about simplicity.

Metal is the second element when designing your room in a contemporary taste. Metals such as chrome, stainless steel and Nickel are accents to show smooth lines and cleanliness. Try purchasing accessories or even different lighting fixtures with great metal accents. Glass is sometimes combined with metal in shelving or even furniture to make a bold statement but yet a simple one.

Texture will be your third element for the modern design. Make sure when you are decorating a contemporary room you are looking for smooth, sleek, and cool textures. Adding these smooth and sleek textures into your room, it will feel more like a home. You can add great textures by using fabrics such as cushions in bright colors; crush velvet, silk, or even linen.. This will give your room just that added style and texture.

Wood is another popular element in modern design. When you choose wood flooring or accessories, avoid traditional oak and select very light pine or dark mahogany to pop against your neutral backdrop. Get creative when you incorporate wood into your room. Go beyond traditional coasters and look for picture frames, vases, or floating wall shelves. The style of the wooden pieces does not have to be consistent, but the tone should be similar to keep the room from becoming too cluttered.

Lighting is extremely important to the overall appearance of a contemporary design. When you want to make the individual pieces stand out, add track lighting. Track lighting is popular in modern design, as the individual lights can be moved like spotlights to highlight particular details. Floor lamps are also a great choice. They soften the room and counteract the harsh effect of bright track lights.

Last but not least is a great rug to incorporate in the contemporary design in your room. Rugs will add one extra layer into the room for texture and also color. If you are looking to make one piece in the room a focal point, why not make it the rug. Try searching around for a great graphic design rug so it will stand out above everything else in the room. If you decide to do so, make sure the rest of the design accessories in the room are relatively simple. You don’t want too much sticking out at once in a contemporary room design.

Adding these ideas to your home design you will have your contemporary decor. However, you will not have a room that is cold and sterile, but a room with some color and texture added in. A warm spot that will welcome all that come to visit.

Interior Design experts all agree that it is essential to use area rugs. And as discussed here one of the most popular ranges is the modern rugs.
