Developing Your Own Home Decor Style

By Abbie Osborne-Wilson

When you see a beautifully decorated room, you usually think the home owner has great style. Many people envy designer room, but they never consider that they could also create a beautiful space by developing their own unique decorating style. When you decide to makeover your home, it’s important to be creative. Even if you love someone else’s design, you should infuse their idea with elements of your own style.

Making your own style of decorating you will find it’s not hard to do. Designing is all about what you like, so when you get ready to redecorate a room make sure it shows your personality. Look at colors you’ve bought for your clothes and incorporate your favorite color into the room. Maybe you love butterflies so add some decorative ideas that help show that part of your personality.

Before you begin decorating your room, take a look in your closet. Go through your wardrobe and pull out your favourite pieces. Don’t overanalyze each item. Just take a quick peak in the closet and pull out the items that immediately catch your eye. Spread them out and look at what you have chosen. Why do you like these pieces? Is it the color? Is it the texture of the fabric? Is it the way it is cut, so that it drapes over you when you wear it? As you discover the colors and textures you are naturally drawn to, you will get some great ideas for styling your home according to your personal preferences.

Maybe you have silk pajamas that you absolutely love. Change around your bedroom, and incorporate the love of silk into the design of the room. Like silk bed sheets and big slippers that are all furry. How about a lovely plush rug that will help the room out? Maybe you like jeans and a t-shirt change the room to a softer look and touch. When decorating you won’t always have to pick the same texture or colors, just as long as they blend in well together you can make all kinds of changes. How about trying out a vase with empty branches, velvet on the furniture, and a fur rug? In fact the difference in textures will help your room look much better

With being creative and trying out new things you will find your own unique style. Every once in a while change something in the rooms you’ve decorated; this will help the room not become bland. Pick something up that makes you stop one day, no matter what it is, it could be the best idea for a change in your room.

Make sure to add your own personal touch throughout the room. As you notice you can always accessorize the walls and tables with pictures, flowers, and even knickknacks, you can accessorize your floor as well. Try picking a great accent rug with the colors which are in the room style choice. No matter your floor size you’ll be able to find a rug which will fit perfectly in your space. Just take a mental note that many people will look at the floor before they look at the wall when entering a room. If you are decorating a larger room a rug is a great accent to break up the open area.

Rugs are a great look on hardwood floors. They will add a bit of a softer feel in the room and also add another great texture or color into the decor of the room you are creating. Make sure when choosing a rug which is in a room with higher traffic, it’s a decent make and thickness. You don’t want to place a thin rug which could possibly tear.

But most important is to leave your personal touches in the way you redecorate. Use of numerous colors that you thought you would never use add a creative flair to the room. Plus the use of other different textures will also add to the room. You unique style is all yours so shake it up and try something new.
