DIY- Window Shutter Installation

By Kathy Jhones

Window shutters are means to bring privacy, control sunlight and act as a decoration to ad elegance into a home. They are perfect as a replacement for conventional shades for covering your windows. Window shutters fall into two main categories, the interior and exterior shutters. The main difference between the two is that the interior ones are fitted for visibility and airflow while the exterior ones are fitted to control light and increase privacy. Most of the window shutters are made from aluminum, faux wood, wood or other suitable materials.

The first thing you should do before installing the shutters on your own is to know the features first before starting on the installation. This will help you succeed in your venture. The shutters should be installed on the window frame or on hanging strips that are usually next to the window. The strips are usually 1×1 inch in dimension and are usually mounted on the wall. Usually, using the hanging strips will make the installation much simpler than using the window frame. Another important step before installing the window shutter is to have it painted with primer and a matching color. For louvered shutters, the best option is to have them spray painted rather than using a brush.

The Installation Process

The window strip should be hanged on the frame side for starting the installation venture. The shutter level and the plumb will be aligned to ninety degrees now. Extra care should be taken to make sure that the shutters are in correct position with the hinges and the opening and closing of the shutters should be checked perfectly before fixing. Now mark the hinge position on the strip by placing the shutters in exact position and then drill the hole in the marked area.

This one of the ways you can use to finish the window installations perfectly. As you can see, they are very simple steps to follow for the installation. If followed correctly the results will be similar to hiring a professional hence there is no need to waste your resources. However, you should note that some types of shutters might not necessarily follow the same process. For instance if it is an aluminum window shutter, it is provided with rollers. These need to be installed before the actual window shutter installation.

When looking for looking for the perfect window shutter to install, it is good to shop online first. This will present you with different choices of materials for your DIY project as there are so many manufacturers offering their products. You will also have a chance to read reviews from people who have already carried out their own window shutter DIY projects. Reading such reviews will inform you on what to choose and what to avoid. Remember the main idea with most window shutters on offer is to facilitate easy installation while still maintaining good looks for the room.
