Simple Steps To Replace Your Drain Trap

By Samuel Lee

A drain trap is a seal that’s placed under the drain of toilets and sinks. It prevents harmful gases and liquids from leaking out of one’s drains. A drain trap needs replacement when it deteriorates in order for it to continue functioning correctly. Should you notice that it’s becoming worn, then it’s time for a drain trap replacement.

To get started, you will need a replacement trap, tape, a wrench, plus a screwdriver. Several hardware stores sell these supplies together in a replacement starter kit. Some kits will contain the drain trap, a tail piece, plus a drain extension. Compare the price tag of a starter kit with the price tag of acquiring the individual pieces before you make your purchase. At times the individual items may possibly be less costly than acquiring a kit.

To begin replacing your trap, turn off your water supply. This will stop water from traveling in your pipes while you are completing this project. More importantly, it will keep you from the need to clean up from flooding. Place a bucket directly below the trap to catch any leaking water. Now, take your wrench and remove the old trap. A little amount of water may trickle out into the bucket at this time. Next, you will use your screwdriver to unscrew the slip nuts.

Then, follow the instructions that are included in your starter kit to insert your new trap. It really is important that you securely fasten the slip nuts, washer and trap in position. After everything is in position, wrap the tape around the pipe sections. This will prevent leaks from slipping out.

Now it is time to rest whether or not you installed everything correctly by turning the water back on. If there are no leaks, then fill the trap with water. If no water or gas escape from the trap, then you appropriately replaced your drain trap. Be certain to examine your trap regularly to make sure it remains in excellent condition.
