By Mathew Slimmen

Stroll though any furniture store and you’ll see couch beds in all different styles, from modern to French. It’s so hard to choose from the attractive styles offered. They are perfect for extra sleeping space for overnight guests. They save space and convert to a bed quickly to provide a good night’s sleep for relatives and friends.

Many names have been given to this piece of furniture. Although the day bed is thought of as modern, the truth is that it has been around in different forms, since ancient days. People used them in Rome, Egypt and Greece in those long-ago times.

Native American tribes had a type of couch bed. During early Medieval days, the titled nobles moved often and their furnishings had to be lightweight for easy portability. Although they had peasants to help with work, only so many things could be moved that often. The ancient Chinese were accustomed to using the same furniture for seating and bedding.

Couch beds are also called hideabeds, pullout couches or sleeper-sofas. The innovations include bunk beds and half-couches. They are made for children as well as adults. Some are made in a style where the couch pillows are used at night as sleeping pillows, which is another space saver (no bed pillows to hide away in a closet during daytime hours.

The Italian tent daybed was in popular use during the Renaissance. Arab tribes in the Mediterranean made good use of tents and made a sort of daybed by piling cushions, blankets and rugs in the corners of a tent. They sat on them by day and slept on them by night.

The Gothic version of the couch beds was a wooden chest, much like the cedar chest or hope chest seen today. It was made with raised arms at either end and was long enough to stretch out and sleep on. It was perfect for seating during the day as well as being a very attractive piece of furniture.

There are numerous colors, patterns and styles to select from. Perfect seating and sleeping can be provided for any home or apartment. They are made in fine leather or upholstered patterns. If you select a futon, you can change the color anytime by purchasing a new cover in a different color or pattern.

For an uncluttered appearance, select a modern or contemporary style. Some are without arms, and all come in various sizes. Some sleep one person, while most accommodate two people. One French style looks as if it’s sitting on a box. All the couch beds are available in a variety of materials, patterns and colors. Modern styles are set on legs. The convenience of quickly providing a comfortable bed for overnight guests is one of the finest features of this piece of furniture.
