No matter where they are from, people want to look good. Sociologists have blamed this perpetual desire on advertising and skewed cultural values. Yet, certain groups of people seem to be expected to abandon this particular social concern. Those living with disabilities are among those numbers. Perhaps you could argue that these people have more important concerns than their appearance. However, personal appearance has a direct impact on self-esteem and this can be especially important for people with foot problems which often distorts the appearance of their feet. Children are especially vulnerable to the way their appearance has been affected by their medical problems. They are also more vulnerable to the abuse of peers as children often have less ability to empathize and have less restraint in what they say. Luckily, the small size of the shoes makes them look less out-of-place than they would on an adult’s feet except for a slightly boxy shape. Despite the social ramifications, it is generally a good idea to take care of foot problems early so they don’t get worse and the shoes are usually cheaper for children than for adults.

The problem facing women is more straightforward. Usually high heel shoes are worn with professional or dressy outfits but it is common knowledge that one is more given to slips or falls in these and they can create pressure points on the feet. Traditional orthopedic shoes for women usually consist of clogs, slippers, or boxy tennis shoes which blend in with only the most casual of outfits. While it is true that you will not find stilettos or extremely high heels – these are bad for the feet to begin with as well as the back since it shifts your center of gravity – some companies are beginning to offer relatively wide heels and most companies have inserts you can buy to prevent pressure points.

Men experience the unique problem that their vanity is not typically as indulged as it is for women but it can still be difficult to wear the beige or white shoes with Velcro straps that make it look like something is wrong with you. Since men’s shoes naturally cause fewer problems for feet due to fewer unnecessary pressure points and slick soles, there are fewer modifications that must be made.

Though it is important for people to feel good about themselves, the availability of fashionable orthopedic shoes also promises to reduce the impact of foot disorders on the lives of patients. Perhaps the shoe industry can lead other industries into treating people with disabilities with respect and understand the lively spirit that resides in them.
