Great Family Fun And Extra Cash – The American Garage Sale
By Allan Marsh
You can get rid of those household items you no longer need and make a profit from it by conducting a garage sale. Who knows, maybe those unwanted items that may be tantamount to “garbage” would be somebody else’s idea of gold. A garage sale would be worth your time and effort if you have a surplus of miscellaneous items you might not want or need. There is no reason to go on storing items you’ll never use.
Ideally, your garage sale should be showcase of items you no longer need, a vestige of decades gone by – old toys, furniture, home appliances, lawn mowers, jewelry, camping gear, drinking glasses, dishes, shakers, dolls, baseball cards or memorabilia, coins, old clothes, coffee pots, roller skates, records, cassettes, CDs, cassette recorders, pictures, books, baseball mitts, footballs, uniforms, jerseys, bags, tools, and take note this is just a partial listing.
A garage is not necessary for you to hold a garage sale. A garage sale can be held anywhere – yard, lawn, basement, garage, porch, or house. But there is a reason why people frequent garage sales, which is what you may want to research on – also find out how to price your items and what people normally buy in these sales.
To hold a garage sale, you don’t necessarily need to have a garage. Why, you can hold your sale in your lawn, your yard, basement, porch, or right in your garage, of course. You may have to do some reading up before holding your garage sale – consider it a feasibility study of sorts as you determine what people want and what prices you should set.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to become friendly with other people holding garage sales and asking them about pricing, how they chose the items to sell and what people normally buy. Find out how they priced the items, then price your own merchandise accordingly.
Generally, people have no preferences when it comes to items at a garage sale. You’d be surprised. They’re pretty much looking for discounts on everything. And when we say bargain, we mean BIG bargain on just about any used item out there. Don’t let ‘em down.
Place signs in high-traffic intersections within a few miles of the location of the sale. Use big, bold lettering and a nice, sturdy piece of cardboard.
And once your sale is over, definitely remove the signs from wherever you placed them. You don’t want people coming to your house after the sale is over.
Your area may have laws, ordinances or statutes regarding garage sales, so make this a part of your research.
Let your research encompass laws on garage sales, and do talk to your local officials regarding this.
