Hand Tool Kit Can Be Empowering

By Sylvie McCallin

Moving into your first home or apartment you may suddenly find that you need a lot of tools you never thought about before. Going out and purchasing a hand tool kit is great, it is even better getting one as a gift for a housewarming present.

Remember that tool kits are made specifically for areas such as cars, home, garden etc so be sure to get one for the home or home/car. A tool kit for the car, for example, might have ratchets instead of a hammer, while a hammer will be much handier around the house. Screwdrivers and wrenches should be included in both car kits and home kits.

Let your selection be guided by the price, the quality of the tools and the selection of tools.

You will find cheaper kits at about $15 and they usually include; hex key kits, a utility blade, small hammer, a flashlight, a bit driver with bits, a tape measure, an adjustable wrench, pliers, a fastener kit and pair of scissors.

A wonderful idea but only if the tools do not break the first time they are used. Check out the weight and quality of the tools. Longer lasting tools are those made from heavier metals.

Tools start to fail especially where they connect together like pliers and adjustable wrenches where overuse make their teeth rounded. Soft-tipped screwdrivers are just the same problem and when the metal is inferior the tips get rounded and they are rendered useless. When you get “build-it-yourself” kits the hex keys are usually included and fastener kits are rarely used.

Get long-lasting tools, buy quality, forget about saving money on kits when you will end up having to purchase them again and again. Brand name tools are the best and worth the money even inexperienced tool handlers can notice the difference.

Look for a kit that includes the basics: a hammer, screw drivers or a bit driver with a good selection of bits Phillips, flat head, and square in a variety of sizes Get a basic kit with quality tools including; both Phillips and flat head screwdrivers, a good hammer, pliers or a wrench and a strong utility knife. You can upgrade these necessities with such additions as a battery powered screw or bit driver, electrical tape, a small level, wiring caps, and hex keys.

Also choose a kit with a quality toolbox. Those that fold into the kit, but may easily be dumped and mixed aren’t the best to deal with when you need a specific tool. Tools need to remain where you put them in the box at least. The very best come with boxes larger than the basic kit, so you can add other things you want and keep them together.
