LCD stands for liquid crystal display and LCD displays are very economical and power-wise. The only time you use a huge amount of power is turning on the backlight when it is dark out. The only drawback is that sometimes you cannot see the LCD display especially in the dark without a light source.

Lastly, there are lots of other features that modern battery alarm clocks have such as temperature readouts, automatic time adjustment with built in radio receivers and other goodies.
