Caring for Your Hardwood Floors
A wood floor adds warmth, natural beauty and richness to any home; and with a little care, you are repaid with a lifetime of value. Caring for a wood floor is easy. The main thing you can do to protect its warmth and character, is to use simple and everyday cleaning techniques.
The main cause of dents or scratches in hardwood floors, is dirt and grit. The dirt acts like sandpaper every time someone walks on it. If you place floor mats or rugs at entrances, you will reduce the amount of dirt that is tracked in to the house.
Spilled water can damage a floors finish and warp the boards. Make sure you clean up all spills right away.
When you clean your floor, use a pH cleaner that is specifically designed to clean hardwood floors. Dont use oil soaps on your floor. The oil can build up and may damage your floor.
If you have to change the position of furniture of the room, make sure you lift and not drag the furniture. Or, you can place felt pads under the legs as it will help in preventing scratches.
Direct sunlight can discolor wood floors. Control sunlight by closing curtains and blinds or by adding drapes.
To get rid of dirt, its best to use a soft indoor broom with fine exploded ends. Dont use a hard bristly outdoor broom. A vacuum with bare floor attachments also works well.
