Creating Your Own Koi Pond

By Roland Stockwell

Any home or office will look more interesting and relaxing if it has a koi pond on the grounds. These ponds are so popular that a lot of homeowners have decided to have their own pond at home. Then again, these ponds are not the easiest to maintain. If you want your fish to stay healthy, your pond should be created properly. Regular maintenance is also necessary so your fish will stay healthy and your pond will look as beautiful as it was at day one.

Koi has become one of the most popular fish around. These are species of carp that people call ornamental carp. Those who are interested to own this particular specie of carp can choose from several varieties. Although different in a number of ways, one thing is for sure. Each koi is a beauty to behold and a great addition to a pond. Also, koi can live for many years provided that the owner takes good care of them.

When it comes to food, koi is not a picky type of fish and enjoys a varied diet. Since they are omnivorous, there are many types of plants that you might consider as food. They eat much less when the weather is cold, and you must be careful not to overfeed during the winter as they cannot process large amounts of food then. Typically the algae found on the pond are already enough food during colder times. If the weather is warm, they tend to have more appetite and eat more. You can even play with these fishes and let them get the food from your hand.

Koi can transform your home, so make it a point to create a beautiful pond for them too. Careful planning is important to ensure that the pond has the right size. The amount of water to be placed in the pond should also be considered as well as the depth of the pond. The pond must also have sufficient water to be ready for the warm season. Koi rests at the bottom part of the pond during the warm season.

Once your pond is filled with water, you then proceed to the next step. You have to ensure that only quality water is in your pond. The water also needs regular inspection and maintenance. Without the use of certain products, this can take too much time and effort. You should avoid chemicals and perhaps think about using an easy, natural cleaning product such as AquaSphere PRO. Another option would be the Healthy Ponds AquaLily floating water cleaner, which is not only effective but also attractive.

These products are approved by veterinarians so you are sure that they will not harm your fish. These non-chemical pond cleaning products will not cause any harm to people who come into contact with the water either. The products work by releasing bacteria that is beneficial to the water, keeping it balanced and preventing the overgrowth of algae. Each packet of the product will last for a period of 30 days. After 30 days, all you need to do is add a brand new AquaSphere PRO or place a packet in the AquaLily dispenser.
