How To Care For Outdoor Teak Furniture

By Derek Rushmoore

Teak patio furniture is the most superior quality patio furniture imaginable. Teak furniture is also very easy to care for. Teak wood has unique qualities that make it excellent for outside use. Teak garden furniture requires very little care or maintenance to last many years.

Teakwood is a costly wood. On the other hand, you should conclude that teak furniture is a great investment because of its long life.

It is good to clean up your teak at least once a year to prevent any dust or dirt. You may spray water using a hose under low pressure to rinse the dirt and dust away. Then, with a soft brush, wash the teak wood delicately with a mixture of water, soap, and a couple tablespoons of bleach. Using too much bleach will give a light color so using bleach is up to you. Afterwards, rinse again with clean water. Dry the surface using a towel to finish.

Outdoor teak furniture which is kept outdoors will naturally start to eventually fade color from the golden honey tone of freshly cut wood to a silver color. The process of teakwood fading to gray is natural and purely cosmetic. The process does not affect the durability of your teak patio furniture.

A few people prefer the golden honey coloring of fresh teak furniture and make use of teak oil in order to preserve it. But teak oil is bad because it must be retreated every three months once you begin applying it. Oils will also increase the likelihood for mildew and black spots to grow. A better idea is to treat with teak sealer once a year after cleaning your teak garden furniture if you want to try to keep the golden tone.

You may choose to employ furniture covers to protect your outdoor teak furniture, especially in the winter months or if your home is in a location with a lot of dust. If you choose to do so, make sure to employ furniture covers made with a breathable fabric. Do not get a cover made from plastic which is certain to trap moisture. This increases the chance of mildew forming on the wood.

Dark stains such as coffee or red wine can be removed by using sandpaper on the outer most layer of your teak patio furniture. You can begin with a mid grade sandpaper and after that finish off with a fine grade to make a smooth outer finish. Sanding is another way of bringing out the honey coloring of teak wood as you are exposing a new level of teak that is permeated with natural oils.

It doesn’t matter if your furniture is a teak adirondack chair or a teak dining set, a little cleaning will go a long way.

As you can see, your teak furniture will likely last decades with very little maintenance from you. As it will last for so long, teak wood is preferred to other types of wood. You should enjoy knowing that the teak furniture set you purchase now can be handed down to your children.
