Looking for some fun? Whatever you do, Don't Click Here!

You’re getting calls from friends hoping for an invite to your house to watch the Sunday game. You have never seen your kids smile so much in their short lives. Even the cable guy is lingering. Yes, you are the man, proud owner of a super high-definition, flat panel, plasma TV. Who wouldn’t be impressed? But you notice that something is missing. The remote? No. The Popcorn? Nope. And then it hits you – where and on what are you going to put this thing?

You might be thinking about mounting it to the living room wall. But after soberly contemplating that painful task, you decide it might be best to find a good TV stand. But what kind should you buy? Should you go simple and just get something to sit the TV on or go all out and get an entertainment center? Where are you going to put it and will it always stay there? These questions and more must be answered if you are to end up with a television stand that meets your needs for the long run. To that end, I have a short list of the five most important areas to look at when purchasing the stand to go with that uber-awesome TV.

Dimensions of the Stand

One of the first points to consider when searching for a TV stand is the dimensions of the stand and set itself. This will require some forecasting, as you will need to determine ahead of time where you might want this stand to sit. You will also need to measure the depth of the television. Make sure your stand is deep enough to accomodate the TV, but also not so deep that it makes your thin, flat panel look small. In addition, consider the height you would like your television to be at, preferrably eye-level from the tallest couch or chair. Ensure that your stand will allow your TV to sit at the appropriate level – an adjustable stand makes this easy.

Pricing

Next, you are going to want to look at price. TV Stands are not cheap. But with television stands, price doesn’t always equal quality. If you purchase a stand from a retail electronics store, you are likely to pay more because they only stock a few models and expect you to buy one there when you purchase your TV. A better option would likely be a furnature store or an online store specializing in just television stands. These places will have more variety, in both look and price, and you will end up happier with the unit you purchase.

Stability

It is important not to overlook this one. What is the load capacity of the stand you are considering? In other words, will it hold the weight of your television for its expected life? Does it look stable? You can find the weight measurements on the box that your television came in. Make sure the weight can be handled by the TV stand, by matching those measurements to the weight specs of the stand. Call the manufacturer or go with a different stand if you cannot locate its weight specifications.

Design

Next, we must address the obvious. You payed a lot of money for the look of your new TV, so don’t corrupt it by placing it on top of some old, second rate TV stand. Match the style of the TV stand to look of the television itself, so they complement one another. Maybe a contemporary or modern look would best match your TV. Are you looking for something made out of glass, or wood, or brushed metal? Will you go with a ceiling mounted stand, or one that swivels? Do you want your stand to match the living room furniture? Do you require doors with which to hide the TV when not in use?

Expandability

Lastly, when shopping for a TV stand, always think ahead. What might you want to do with this TV? Are you going to attach a DVR, DVD Player, Game System, Computer, or any other external component? Will you be attaching the TV to a stereo or speaker system? Does it need room for additional display items, such as picture frames, or a lamp? You don’t want to make such a purchase without thinking through your potential uses for the stand and where it might be needed.
