Small Bathroom Ideas-Maximize Your Space
By Illa Maden
Bathroom remodeling takes some careful thought when seeking small bathroom ideas.
Begin by making a list of what you most need and want in your bathroom.. This takes more thought and planning when you are dealing with a small bathroom design. You, above anyone else, are better equipped to make these decisions.
Decide whether it will be a full bathroom remodel or only a partial remodel. Get a ballpark idea of how much you can budget for this project. This will be refined as you shop for materials and decide what is most important to you.
The small bathroom ideas that prove useful will depend on whether it is used by all members of the household and it’s guests, as in the case of a main bath, or whether it is a private area such as a master bath.
A main bath may have to serve the needs of various age groups. If it is the only bath, it will serve the whole family as well as guests. If there are young children in the household, that needs to be taken into consideration.
A master bath is a more private area, and you may want more luxury, and different amenities such as a whirlpool tub, a steam shower, or a two person soaking tub. Give what you want, and what will fit your space and budget some serious thought. Sometimes you may have to forego one amenity in order to have another. Decide what is the most important to you.
Color choices are important when selecting flooring, surfaces and wall color in a small bathroom. The right colors will visually expand the space, and the wrong colors will close in the space and make you feel cramped.
Keep flooring patterns simple as well as light in color. Using tiles that are larger will also help to expand the feel of your bathroom space. Avoid busy designs.
A glass shower door rather than a shower curtain adds visual space. A sliding door on a shower consumes less real space than one that swing out into the room.
The natural light from a window will brighten up a small space and make it feel less cramped. Keep window treatment simple. Use a less-full valance to give it a finished look. A mini-blind or bamboo shade can be used underneath for privacy.
Dark colored cabinetry can seem to protrude from the wall and squeeze you in. If you are keeping existing cabinetry, sand it thoroughly and give it a new stain either in a light wood tone, or in a color. This is good even if your cabinets aren’t dark. A new color will add to the new feel and look of your bathroom. If installing new cabinets, keep them light and neutral.
Towel rods consume a lot of wall space. Replace them with towel rings which are more trendy and attractive.
There are also fixtures that are designed for smaller bathroom spaces. This too is an option for your small bathroom design. The fixtures themselves are designed at a smaller scale, freeing up space.
The shape of your bathroom may make another small bathroom idea useful. Corner fixtures can sometimes be a better fit for your space and it’s shape. There are tubs, pedestal sinks, and even toilets designed for corner applications.
When you have put all your small bathroom ideas together, created your design, and finished your bathroom remodel it is time to enjoy and be proud of your new space. Small spaces need to be kept up on a regular basis. A small mess in a small space takes on larger proportions in the mind’s eye. Take just five minutes a day to scan the room and quickly put out of sight those things that may have gotten left laying around.
