Home Safety Tips: Outdoor Perimeter Protection

By Mark Mahaffey

When you think of home safety and security, you may not think first of the exterior of your home. But the truth is, good home protection starts outside the walls of your home. Waiting until a thief is inside your home may be waiting too late. The best time to stop him is before he makes his way inside your house.

The sooner you can be alerted about the presence of an intruder on your property, the better. This is why outdoor perimeter protection is so important. The perimeter of your property is your first defense against criminals. There are many ways that you can set up your outdoor perimeter protection. Just keep in mind that the more layers of protection you can set up, the safer you will be.

Video cameras are a great first step in improving your home safety plan. These are perfect for putting up outside where they can record what happens in your driveway and other areas outside your home. The good news is that you can buy outdoor cameras that can stand up to the various kinds of weather, from rain to snow to wind and sun.

If you do not want the video cameras running constantly, you can set them to record only when there is motion detected, thus not only saving electricity but also increasing your home safety and security as well. Choose motion activated cameras. They will remain in the off position until something moves in the area upon which they are trained.

Installing a fence around your property is also a smart way to deter burglars. Put up a tall (at least six feet) fence. Make it as strong as you can and also put a locked gate at the entrance to your driveway. This is also a perfect place to put one of your cameras as well, so that you can see who comes to your driveway gate.

Lighting is also important. Look around your yard. Is it very dark at night? If so, then you are inviting criminals to your home. They prefer to break into dark houses because there is less chance of them being caught. Install security lights to increase your home safety.
