Barbecues are always a great time to get friends and family together for some fabulous food and fun. Of course, summertime is always the best time to have the perfect barbecue get-together as the sun is usually shining and the days last longer. If you’re hosting a barbecue event then you will discover that it can be more fun than hard work if you prepare in advance and have everything in order. You want to be able to enjoy yourself on the day of the event without having to run around worrying about items that you may not have purchased or other hassles.
The preparation for the barbecue is the most important thing you should have on your agenda. Make sure that you have a list before you go out shopping for the necessities. Make sure that you have in mind what you are going to be cooking, what your side dishes will be and what types of drinks you are going to serve. Other items that you will want to plan for are things like coals and lighter fluid (or propane for gas grills), plenty of serving trays and dishes, cups, forks, spoons and knives, paper plates, napkins, tablecloths, ice, coolers, etc.
Plan ahead, work ahead
You might want to consider preparing everything the night before in order to alleviate some of the stress, and so you won’t be running around the day of the barbecue like a chicken with your head cut off. Prepare the tables with the tablecloths and set things out like the utensils and napkins. Also, you can prep the meat the night before by marinating and seasoning it. Kebabs are always a great idea for the grill and can easily be prepared before hand. You can also get the drinks ready for the cooler by setting them in the bottom of the cooler and that way, on the day of the barbecue, all you have to do is pour the ice on top of them.
If you’re making special drinks like Mimosas, you can prepare the fruit for them in advance as well. Cut the fruit and put it into the jug that you will be using and that way all of the juices will have a chance to marinate together over night. Beer and wine should be kept in a separate cooler for the drinkers at the event. You should also keep bottled water and juice drinks on hand for kids and adults that prefer water above anything else. If you’re making any types of desserts, it’s a good idea to get those out of the way the night before, too, especially if you’re making things like cookies, cakes or Jell-O molds.
Don’t forget the e-vites
Make sure that you have an idea of what your friends’ and family’s likes and dislikes are. Everyone is different and has different tastes, so you want to make sure that you incorporate all types of different flavors and textures into your foods. Also, you’ll never know if there is going to be a vegetarian in the group, so having plenty of fruits and veggies on the menu is always best.
You will want to incorporate some fun into your event, as well. You can go online and look for fun games to play like sack races, dunking for apples and other fun activities. If you are going to have kids at the event, then games and other fun things to do are especially important. You can set up an outdoor painting station where they can paint pictures or on each other’s faces, water activities, badminton, volleyball, horseshoe toss and much more.
Lastly, get a good e-vite going well ahead of time. You can send these via e-mail or even text message them to your friends and family prior to the barbecue event. If some of your friends and family members are not up to date with technology yet, then make sure you mail an invitation a couple of weeks beforehand to these individuals.
Planning a barbecue may require some multitasking skills, but it can also be quite fun. It is best, if your event is going to be large, to have another family member or friend help you prepare so that you don’t become overwhelmed. The day of your event will be fun, exciting and full of laughter if you plan ahead and plan with ease.
