How To Select A Handyman Service You Can Afford From Thrift Urban Housing

By Erik Parker

If your flat seems to be falling apart at the seams, here are some valuable tips on how to select a handyman service. Everyone needs to have phone numbers for some very important people: a doctor, a dentist, a good friend – and a handyman! Each person can help solve some very serious problems. However, it’s usually the handyman we need more than anyone else.

Many people have developed a bad habit – if something breaks, it stays that way. Why? It’s easier to see a cracked piece of glass, a few broken tiles or a drippy faucet than trying to find someone who can fix it all in one trip and only cost a few pounds instead of a week’s salary.

If your needs are simple, you might do better just ringing up someone perhaps one of your neighbors has used. An older gentleman perhaps on pension might be able to do your job at a fraction of what a professional company might charge, and he might even be more reliable.

Start with neighbors. Almost everyone has used a handyman at one time or another and they’d be happy to share a phone number and give you a reference. Talk to relatives who have had some work done. Look around your neighborhood to see who might have workmen milling about. They might have a handyman right there, or they can refer you to someone they have worked with.

Check references and then ask what his specialities might be. If you need some electrical work done, for instance, he might not be the one. Some prefer only outdoor work such as gardens or even construction; others love to tinker with fixing old appliances and that leaky bathroom faucet.

If you are asked to sign a contract, do read it thoroughly. Make certain you understand who pays for any damages or even personal injuries if he happens to get hurt on the job.
