Installing A Steel Pocket Door

By Cathy Mercer

A steel pocket door is a great way to change the look of your room and also give you much more space in that same area. Unlike traditional doors that swing in a direction when opened, pocket doors slide into the wall. They disappear from sight and in the process you do not have a door swinging from one spot to another.

The installation of these doors can be tricky if you don’t know what you are doing or if you have not done this before. The first thing you must make sure of is that you have the proper tools for the job. This is not just an installation of a regular door. This is going to be put inside the wall on both sides of the entryway so it must be done the right way.

Typically you will find them in a bedroom but they are starting to show up in various other places as well. The decorator that you might have hired to re decorate your home will probably recommend these types of doors for any room in your home that can support them. Just like with anything else you will have options with these as well.

Sometimes the entire wall must be torn out and replaced just to install such a doorway and this is not what a homeowner will want to do. It can be very costly as well because not only will the material be expensive but taking a very long time will cost a lot in labor. You want to make sure you have professionals doing the work as well.

If using a wooden one you might have more options of where they can be installed simply because they are lighter in construction. The steel ones are surely heavier but they do offer more protection and security. The design options can probably be considered almost the same because whatever you can do with a wooden one you can almost do with steel one.

Aside from the technical portion of the installation you also need to pick a design that suits your style as well as fits the decor of your home. Some people stick with a plain door since they will mostly be open all the time. They figure why spend the extra money on a fancy door when no one will see them any way most times.

If you want to install these on your own you can. The kits usually sell in any home hardware store in your area. The kits can sometimes be a bit expensive so it helps if you know what you re doing and know what to look for. You will also need to make sure that you have all the proper tools otherwise more money will be spent.

This is how they were thought of early on and eventually they evolved into just using them as doors as opposed to closing off or opening up a larger room. Steel pocket door is much sturdier and was used in a business environment and would only sometimes be used in home. Wood was normally used but s time went on and designs changed people were inclined to use either one.
